Why 80% of Your Content Should be Based Around Value.
When it comes to your content schedule, do you have a plan? Or just wing it and post as you go? Today we’re introducing you to the 80/20 rule - which is something we here at Daily Digital are aiming to implement into our social media strategy; and you should too! Here’s why 80% of your content should be focused on providing value, and only 20% should focus on promotion.
What is the 80/20 rule?
The 80/20 rule helps you to plan out your content schedule and better connect with your audience. The 80/20 rule says that 80% of your content should aim to add value, educate, and engage with your audience. Leaving the remaining 20% of content to be based on promoting your business. This rule works in your and your audience's favour. How? Well, sorry to tell you, but your audience doesn’t want to be subscribed to your sales pitch. The 80/20 rule allows you to create click-worthy content that has your target audience's interests at heart.
Aim to be subtle
Here’s why you should aim to be subtle when promoting your business.
1. You don’t want it to be obvious that all you’re doing is trying to get new business…this can be off-putting for potential customers. Instead, if you aim to be subtle, this is more powerful.
2. You don’t want to overload your Insta feed with promo content: people will begin to expect this from you and start to view you as a spammy brand.
3. Constant promotion could make it seem like you’re screaming out for new clients, or that you’re possibly struggling to attract new business.

Celebrate your wins
Of course, you should be promoting your business wins online, sharing reviews about your business and posting general content that will promote a call to action. However, when you do this 80% of the time and only leave your audience with 20% of the value from you... You’re doing yourself and your audience a disservice. Instead, aim to provide content that is going to be helpful to your audience. Teach them something new or give them something you know they’ll enjoy.
Now that we’ve discussed the 80/20 rule it’s now time to stop and do some reflecting. We ask you to stop and reflect on your last year of posting. What were you providing to your audience? Are you posting entertaining, interesting, or added-value content? We’re your posts educational? Maybe you worked with an influencer? Or, maybe focused on self-promo? Whatever it may be, we hope you can recognise your patterns to come up with a new plan using the 80/20 rule in 2023.
